ONLINE Study-Trip 2021 - Call for Applications

Call for Applications: DAAD Digital Study Trip 2021:

"World politics and the EU as a global actor", October/November 2021

About:
Annually, the joint German-Ukrainian Master program “German and European Studies”
is organizing a study trip for Ukrainian Bachelor students to Germany. The study trip is
part of the DAAD-funded cooperation project DSG “German and European Studies
(DES)” implemented by Kyiv Mohyla Academy (NaUKMA) and Friedrich Schiller
University Jena (FSU).

This fully funded study trip aims to offer the participants a first insight in the political
system and sphere of Germany and getting a detailed knowledge about current German
and European political debates through high level expert discussions.
Since 2020, due to restrictions as a result of the COVID 19 pandemic, most international
exchange was stopped. Still, for Ukrainian experts and DES peers, there is a significant
interest in analysing current challenges facing the European Union. That is why we are
offering a high-panel digital lecture series in October/November 2021 for the following
target group:

- Ukrainian students in Bachelor programs in the 3rd or 4th year
- very good level of English (knowledge of German is an optional advantage)
- interest in learning more about / entering the NaUKMA-FSU Double
Master-Programme in “German and European Studies (DES)”, after finishing their B.A.

● Background:
In 2021, the world is more connected than ever, and in this multipolar world, the EU is a
unique political actor. Within its over 60 years of existence, the EU grew from an economic
community to a multilevel political union with an internal single market, collective
European institutions, and 27 member states. The Union acts, in many political areas, as
one unified player in the multipolar world of the 21st century.
During the last few years, the EU was faced with several internal challenges and obstacles.
However, in our digital lecture series, we want to shift the attention from the inside to the
outside and examine the EU as a global actor in world politics in twelve individual
sessions. These sessions will be guided by experts from local academia as well as
members of political and research institutions. The aim of the lecture series is an enriched
understanding of the EU not only as a system of political institutions and 27 countries, but
as a global actor in a multipolar world. Over the period of three weeks in October and
November 2021, we will offer regular expert discussions on the following topics, as of
now:

● The future of the EU as a whole
● Belarus and the Eastern parts of the EU and relations with Russia
● The challenge of corruption
● Global EU Development politics
● EU foreign military deployment and cooperation with UN peacekeeping missions
● EU-China relations
● EU-Turkey relations
● The challenges of post-Brexit
● EU-US relations and consequences for NATO
● The normative aspects of the EU

Furthermore, the participants will get additional information about the FSU Jena as a
study destination, and the DES M.A. program specifically.
